Canon Baptist Church evolved from the Cheerful Helpers Club which organized January 15, 1955, with seven members under the leadership of the late Pastor R. T. Bingham. The group met at Sister Callie Phillips home located at 519 North Phillips. On February 13, 1975, the name changed to Greater Canon Baptist Church (GCBC) and relocated from 737 N.E. 8th St to its current location at 731 N.E. 4th Street, Oklahoma City, OK 73104. Between July 18, 1956, and 2017 there have been at least ten noted pastors. On the fourth Sunday of December 2017 Dr. Wilburn Bruner became pastor Emeritus after over 35 faithful years of service.
In honor of Dr. Wilburn Burner, Phillips between 4th and 5th street was named Dr. Wilburn Bruner Drive
On January 1, 2018, Pastor John Nathan Sr.and Lady CeCe Holmes, joined Greater Canon in service. Outreach and mission work continues throughout the community and partnering with others has been instrumental in the Kingdom building through the Greater Canon family. Pastor Holmes was installed on Sunday June 24th of 2018.
